Before the game started on April 15th, many family and friends filled the bleachers early to support the seniors on senior night. Twenty minutes before game time, seniors #6 Macey Pustka, #9 Kenedy Wood, #5 Hanna Zachary and manager Juliet Davenport were announced for their commitment to the team and were awarded with gifts, flowers and hugs from both parents and teammates.
The top of the first inning started with a ground out to Senior Macey Putska, a pop out to Sophomore Addison Matula and a strikeout to lead into the bottom of the first. Senior Hanna Zachary gets a walk and steals second on a wild pitch, but is thrown out at third on a hit to left field by Junior Grace Halata. Macey ends the inning with a pop-up to center field.
The second inning starts with another ground out to Macey and another pop out to Addison, and an additional ground out to Macey. When the Lady Brahmas start their at bat, Junior Taylor Yeatts gets a single to center field, she then steals second from a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. Next up is Addison, and she gets a single to left field to bring in Taylor. Sophomore Elizabeth Felcmen follows Addison with a ground ball to the pitcher, who chooses to make a fielder’s choice to get the lead runner (Addison) out at third. Sophomore Ashyn Pustka hits a ground ball to the shortstop, who gets the lead runner at second (Elizabeth). Ashyln steals second on a passed ball to make it to second base. Junior Alaina Halata pulls out a walk. Hanna is back up to bat but ends the inning with a pop-up to the second baseman.
For the Lady Cobras, it was a quick top of the third inning by the Brahmas, who shut them down with three up and three down. With a pop fly to Macey, a ground ball to Taylor and Elizabeth. Caitlynn Halata started off the bottom of the third inning with a crashing hit over the fence of center field, adding a second run to the board. Grace comes up next, but grounds out to the second baseman. Macey followed with another ground out to the third baseman for out number two. Taylor comes up to the plate next and gets a walk and advances to third on a single by Addison. Elizabeth hits a ground ball to the shortstop and reaches second base on an error, which brings in Taylor and Addison to score the third and fourth runs of the game. Ashlyn gets the third out of the inning with a pop-up to the second baseman.
The fourth inning started with a ground out to Addison, the third baseman, for out number one. In center field, Hanna catches a fly ball to make it two outs, and pitcher Grace strikes out the next batter to get the third out. Alaina starts the Lady Brahmas at bat with a ground out to third, and it’s back to the top of the line-up with Hanna, who gets a base hit to right field, then steals second and reaches third on an error. Caitlynn brings Hanna in with a single to left field, to make it 5-0. On a 1-2 count, Grace gets a single to center to put runners on second (Caitlynn) and first (Grace), but the inning is over with a pop out by Macey to the second baseman.
Grace gets back-to-back strikeouts for all three outs in the top of the fifth inning! Addison starts the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk, advances to second on a sacrifice bunt from Elizabeth for out number one, and reaches third on a wild pitch. Ashlyn comes up to bat next and follows with an additional walk and manages to steal second. Alaina comes up next and is struck out for the second out of the inning. Hanna follows with a groundout to third base, leaving two players on base to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth, Industrials #9 claims first base on a walk by Grace. #8 comes up next and gets a four-pitch walk, to put runners on second and third. #4 is then able to reach first on a fielder’s choice. To the pitcher, the next batter up gets a single to center and brings in two runs to make the score 5-2. #2 comes up next and strikes out. #12 has a fielder’s choice and reaches first base while Addison gets the lead runner, #4, out at third. Ashlyn is able to shut down the inning by playing a ground ball and hosing down the lead runner at home plate. Next up for the Lady Brahmas is Caitlynn hits a fly ball to center field for a single, Grace follows with a sacrifice bunt to move Caitlynn to second base. Macey pops out to second base. A ground out to third by Taylor ends the inning.
Out number one of the last inning is a ground out to the third baseman, Addison. Next batter up gets a single to left field, and the following runner gets walked, putting runners on second and third. Out number two is a fly ball to left field, and Grace follows with a strikeout to end the game.
The Lady Brahmas had their first playoff game, against Nixon-Smiley, on Thursday, April 24, in Cuero, with a walk-off home run hit by Senior Hanna Zachary, ending with the score 15-0. Stay tuned for play-off information!
