As Thanksgiving approaches, we find ourselves preparing for this holiday centered around family, traditions and gratitude. Whether it’s sharing a meal with loved ones or simply enjoying time off from work and school, this holiday allows us to pause and reflect on what we are thankful for.
Dating back to the early 1600s, Thanksgiving originated as a harvest festival. Since then, this holiday has become a celebration of and remembrance of all the blessings you received in the past year. Although traditions may vary, the core values of Thanksgiving are gratitude, thankfulness and family.
For many, Thanksgiving is all about the food. Traditional dishes that may fill your dinner table are turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Family recipes are passed down from generations bringing a uniqueness to each dish, its flavor, and its story. Sharing these meals has become one of the most practiced and cherished traditions of Thanksgiving creating a sense of connection and camaraderie.
A poll was conducted asking all Hallettsville ISD staff what their favorite Thanksgiving foods are. It is no surprise that the top contender was dressing, then coming in close second was honey ham. Some more unexpected items were brisket, and a jalapeno cheese rice (made by his wife!) Not forgetting about desserts, pecan pie came high in first with pumpkin pie following not far behind.
Beyond the meal, Thanksgiving gives us a chance to reflect on the people and experiences that brought us joy in the past year. Taking a moment to appreciate friends, family and the little things we can often take for granted can make this holiday even more meaningful. Sharing what you’re thankful for before dinner is another tradition that brings family closer and reminds us of our blessings and to appreciate life’s blessings.
When the staff was asked what they were thankful for, it was no surprise that the answers were spread across the board. As expected, family and friends were ranked one. But other more unique answers included pets, time off work, travel, and being blessed to be a Hallettsville Brahma! It is important to recognize all the small things that you can be thankful for.
For many, Thanksgiving is also a time for giving back to others. In another country, across town, or in the comfort of your own home, people often donate and volunteer their time to help those who are less fortunate than them and do not get a traditional holiday celebration or meal. These acts of kindness remind us that gratitude is also about how we can share what we have with others. Even small gestures can spread the Thanksgiving message across to many people.
As we celebrate this Thanksgiving, it’s important to embrace the true meaning of this holiday. Whether it is a traditional meal, an act of kindness, or simply saying “thank you,” these are moments that make Thanksgiving so special.
