Over the past decade my favorite franchise, Marvel, has been bought out by Disney. When I first discovered Marvel, they were making some of the best movies I had ever seen. They made movies that made me want to go see them in theaters, but now I couldn’t care less about whether or not I get to see movies from my favorite franchise.
When I first watched a Marvel movie I was amazed by the storytelling and how visually appealing it was, but in recent years many of the new Marvel movies have made me want to stop watching them all together.
After Avengers: Endgame, I feel that Marvel got lazy and started scrambling to find anything they thought would appeal to an audience, but it massively failed. In recent years, Disney came out with Black Widow which did well at the box office but after seeing the film many fans, including myself, attacked the film for its lack of storytelling, the confusion of the storyline and the characters in the movie. Fans thought that the movie was a poor representation of how well Marvel had been doing in the other three “Phases”.
With most movies after Endgame, Marvel got careless on the visual effects, and the fans made it very clear that they would not put up with the carelessness of the “new” Marvel.
Along with the careless visual effects, Marvel’s storytelling became very different as they tried to update their writing with their demographic. While there is nothing wrong with trying to stay up-to-date with your audience, Marvel could have done better.
After their longest and most successful saga ended, Marvel started trying to incorporate new characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe like Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk. After the first season of She-Hulk came out audiences went straight to social media to pick out all the flaws they found. I think that Marvel trying to stay up to date with audiences in ways like dancing in the middle of an episode or bringing a celebrity to cameo in a show that has nothing to do with them just doesn’t fit the character of what made many people Marvel fans to begin with.
Marvel will forever have a place in my life and I will always stay part of the fandom, but I do think that some of the writing has gotten way worse and has been replaced with something that could not ever be compared to the original Avengers movies or the Iron Man series. While they did have some good hits in recent years, most of it has been a disgrace to the MCU and Marvel as a whole.
