Hallettsville is embarking on a journey to provide new opportunities for students. This year, the high school introduced a new class: dance. Many students have seized the opportunity and joined in search of skill development, stress relief, social interaction and cultural exposure. This class jumped into the year full of hope, acceptance and fun.
Dance is an excellent way to stay active, improve your cardiovascular health, and build strength and flexibility. It is also a fantastic way to meet new people and make friends with people who share similar interests as you do. Dance instructor, Mrs. Mackenzie Bivins is extremely happy to be the first generation to start this journey that could hopefully turn into something permanent.
“I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to start the dance program here at HHS. Since we are a smaller campus, the choices for electives are limited. Offering a dance class gives students another opportunity to fulfill their fine arts credit requirement,” Mrs. Bivins recognized.
Bivins and the students in the class hope that dance will become something more here at HHS. Having a drill team is one of their goals for next year.
“I genuinely do hope that this dance class becomes a dance team. Mrs. Bivins is the perfect instructor, and the team would be the perfect addition to our high school. Dance really does bring people together,” senior Brenna Scott said. “I am endlessly grateful that I decided to enroll in it. I would love to see what Mrs. Bivins achieves with a dance team! I know it will be phenomenal work. I hope my classmates in dance continue to improve their skills; I would be so happy to see them performing to an actual audience.”
Mrs. Bivins and students like Brenna hope this experience will inspire others to take new chances and to try new things.
“I went to college for dance education, so I am grateful to our administration who gave me the chance to offer this class,” Mrs. Bivins said. “Without their support, this wouldn’t have happened. We have already learned so many new dance skills and styles this year, and the students in the class are always eager to come to class and learn each day! I can’t wait to continue next semester, and one day, hopefully, create our very own drill team!”
Many students express that dance can bring so much relief and joy to their school day, a relief that no other class has achieved for them.
