Performing arts is a fun, engaging way to become better involved with the community as well as challenge and get to know yourself. Many people find a lot of importance in performing arts; the joy and friendship that comes from being involved with the arts. A performing arts center would be a great place for the city and community of Hallettsville, providing a place for creative expression, community, and school activities.
Performing arts centers, or PACs, are performing spaces to be used by all people, for all activities, including dance, music and theater. Here in Hallettsville, a PAC would greatly benefit our community and change our town for the better.
Performing arts are often overlooked in importance, but they have many benefits and play a strong role in our society. Performing arts are great tools to learn self-expression, empathy, creativity and an understanding of the body through movement and expression.
Because of the many benefits of performing arts, schools often want to incorporate them into students’ lives. Currently, school activities such as band and one-act play are often limited in what they can do. In both Hallettsville schools the only spaces provided are a small, outdated cafetorium, small practice spaces, or a small gymnasium stage. With a performing arts center that could change. Students from both schools could now practice and perform with a larger area, more equipment and up-to-date electronics.
For some activities – mainly one-act play – our school will need to host competitions every eight years. Right now, at Hallettsville High School, the stage does not meet requirements; this means renting out a stage from a different place. Renting a stages cost thousands of dollars, having a PAC in Hallettsville would save money in the long run.
Not only would a PAC be beneficial to arts, but also to other school activities. Events such as banquets and ceremonies could be held in an auditorium instead of the high school gym or cafeteria. An auditorium could have much more comfortable seats for long events and would have more space for people to get comfortable, as well as a better space for students to prepare and better acoustics if people need to give a speech.
Not only are performing arts important to schools, but also important to the community as a whole. Many people see the importance of performing arts. Watching, and being involved in productions can bring entertainment, joy and community to many people. Yet, in Hallettsville, there aren’t many opportunities to be involved in performing arts outside of high schools. For people who aren’t in school or have full schedules, there is no chance to act in a play or be a part of a symphony. With a PAC everyone in Hallettsville and surrounding towns could join a performance, adding a fun experience for both students and the community.
Many may say that a PAC isn’t worth the hassle. Some people may argue that the cost would be too high, or that it’s too much work to find a space for one. Those arguments are valid, but they underestimate the value that performing arts could bring to our community. The effort would be worth the outcome. Having a space for all people to enjoy themselves would be a great benefit to the community.
A performing arts center would be wonderful for the community of Hallettsville. It could be a space loved by many and a safe space for those who love the stage. It could help further education and bring joy to the community. The city of Hallettsville and surrounding areas would greatly benefit if we had a performing arts center.
