November 5 marked the last day to vote across the United States in the 2024 General Election. In Texas, these elections decided both national and local leaders. The voter turnout in Lavaca County increased dramatically from the primary election in 2022, 10,510 ballots were cast out of 14,590 registered voters – compared to 4,903 ballots cast and 13,791 registered voters in 2022.
In the national election, Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump and running-mate James David (JD) Vance won both the electoral and popular vote. Trump received 277 electoral votes and 51% of the popular vote.
The senate elections resulted in a three seat flip in favor of the Republican party. As of this morning, 53 seats belong to the majority party, the Republicans, and 42 to the Democrats.
No majority has been decided in the House yet. A one seat flip also in favor of the Republican party added to the Republican lead so far in the House, with 198 seats compared to 180 for the Democratic Party.
The Texas state elections resulted in Ted Cruz’s victory over Collin Allred in the Senate race. The Republican Party has won 25 to the Democratic Party’s 12 in the House elections.
In Lavaca County, the Proposition A Hallettsville ISD Bond; Lavaca County Sheriff; Tax Assessor Collector; County Treasurer; County Commissioner Precinct 1 and 3; Justice of the Peace Precinct 1; Constable Precinct 1, 2, 3 and 4; and County Attorney were all voted on.
The Proposition A Hallettsville ISD Bond did not pass, receiving only 1,607 votes (40.97%) for to 2,317 (59.03%) against.
The County Sheriff, Stephen Greenwell, Republican candidate running for consecutive terms; County Attorney candidate James M. Reves, Republican; and County Treasurer and Tax Assessor candidates Tammy Koerth and Deborah Sevcik, respectively, all ran unopposed.
Republican candidates Edward Pustka and Kenny Siegel received the County Commissioner seats in Precinct 1 and 3, respectively. Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1 is James Foster, Republican.
Constables for Precincts 1, 2, 3 and 4 are Mike Buchanek, David W. Beyer, Larry W. Hlavac, and Kerry L. Peterson; all Republican candidates who ran unopposed.
In the Vysehrad School Board elections, Alice Janak ran unopposed for the School Board Place 2; Board Member Place 3 resulted in the election of Agnes Greer by a difference of 37.86%; Place 6 belongs to Liz Baker by a difference of 33.98%; and Place 7 to Mike Michalac, unapposed.
