After facing off against Rice last Friday and taking on Palacios yesterday, the Lady Brahma Volleyball team has begun what they hope will be a long district run. Last Friday, the Lady Brahmas defeated Rice in four sets, winning their first district game of the season. Yesterday, the Lady Brahmas outscored the Palacios Sharkettes in three sets, securing their second.
Before taking on the Sharkettes, the Lady Brahmas had their “Little Sister’s Night.” Each varsity athlete was accompanied by two or more elementary students as they warmed up.
The first set opened with a kill by junior Haven Drozd (#11) followed closely by another by senior Kasey Harper (#8). Sophomore Addison Matula (#13) scored an ace, followed by a tip point by sophomore Jans Henke (#7). Matula followed with two more aces. Three errors by the Lady Brahmas and one by the Sharkettes would bring the score to 5-7. The next series of points consisted of kills by Harper and errors on both sides. A timeout was called by the Lady Brahmas as the Sharkettes went up one point with a score of 14-13. Out of the timeout, three errors by the Lady Brahmas and a tip point by the Sharkettes extended Palacios’ lead. A block by Henke and freshman Christine Felcman (#15), another ace by Matula, a kill by Harper and a kill by Kenedy Wood (#5) tied the game at 20. Three errors by the Sharkettes followed by an ace by freshman Caitlynn Halata (#10) and a kill by Harper concluded the set with a score of 25-20 in favor of the Lady Brahmas.
The second set opened with a service error for both teams, before Matula scored an ace, giving the Lady Brahmas their first lead of the set. A series of errors against both teams kept the score neck and neck. Kills by Wood and Harper, a block by Wood and junior Alaina Halata (#2) and two errors against the Sharkettes would put the Lady Brahmas up 4-10. A kill and a save by Drozd and another kill by Harper preceded a series of points by the Sharkettes- the last run Palacios would have in the set. Kills by Harper, Felcman and Henke took the Lady Brahmas past 20 points. Two aces in a row by Harper ended the set 13-25.
Haven Drozd opened the third set with a kill, but a series of errors against the Lady Brahmas would give the Sharkettes an early lead. Felcman would score on a tip and lift against the Sharkettes would bring the Lady Brahmas within two. Both teams scored consecutive kills, but four more errors against the Lady Brahmas and a Sharkette kill would put Hallettsville down by seven. The Lady Brahmas would go on a scoring run after two errors against the Sharkettes, a block by Felcman and Harper, one kill by Harper and two by Henke would bring the Lady Brahmas within two. Two consecutive errors by the Sharkettes would tie the game at 19. A kill by Wood would be covered by two points by the Sharkettes, giving the Sharkettes a 22-20 lead. Three kills by Drozd would give the Lady Brahmas the needed lead and a final error by the Sharkettes closed the set at 23-25. Giving Hallettsville a victory in three sets.
The Lady Brahmas travel to Columbus this Friday, Sep. 27 to take on the Cardinals. They are currently 14-17 overall and 2-2 in district play.
