As he lines up to the tee, Luke Freytag can feel the pressure of everyone watching him. Despite the feelings of doubt, he swings, trusting that the weeks of after-school trips to the course will pay off in competition. Freytag says that he joined golf this year because he enjoys playing outside of school and playing it in school is an opportunity to spend more time with his friends.
“I joined golf because I’ve played the sport for a while and I’m decent at it and my friends are doing it,” Freytag said.
As the season gets into full swing, Freytag shares that he hopes that the varsity team will play better this year than last year. Despite being a freshman, he has big goals for this year.
“I hope that the Varsity team can go to state and do better than last year,” Freytag stated.
Head golf coach Brock Gerlich shares Freytag’s hopes for another great season and the goal of qualifying for state. The Brahma golf team competed at state for the first time last year. That team comprised four seniors, making this year almost a fresh start for the team.
“I am hoping we have another great season and carry the momentum over from last year. Last year was a historic season for Brahma Golf as we had our first boy’s team qualify for state. We have a few from that team coming back and they know the expectations are high,” Gerlich explains.
Gerlich understands that his team needs to work on things like conditioning, but he also believes that these obstacles can be overcome.
“I think we need to work on becoming consistent. We also need to work on our conditioning because when you walk 18 holes in a day it equates to about 3-5 miles,” Gerlich said.
The golf team’s next tournament will be on March 10 at the Victoria Country Club.
