HISD School Board Meeting Recap Aug. 28, 2024

Wednesday, Aug. 28th at 6 p.m. the Hallettsville ISD School Board called a special Board Meeting to discuss and approve school budget matters for the past and upcoming fiscal school year. An Executive Session followed under Texas Government Code Section 551.074.

The items discussed included amendments to the 2023-2024 school year and adoption of the proposed budgets for the 2024-2025 school year; the Board also approved a proposed property tax rate. A public hearing was held on the topic, no one wished to address the Board.

Amendments to the 2023-2024 budget were funded by the school’s Fund Balance and included updates to the Hallettsville ISD’s maintenance and operations, security, transportation and instruction.

The proposed budget for the 2024-2025 school year includes over $90,000 less in expected revenue than the previous year.

The Board approved an increase to local property taxes to help cover the increased expenses from unfunded state mandates taxable value for local property increased by 20.66% between this year and last. The property tax increase is not equivalent to the taxable value increase.

The next Hallettsville ISD School Board meeting will be held on Sep. 9 at 6:00 p.m. at 302 North Ridge St., Hallettsville, TX 77964.

Anyone wishing to provide public comment to the Board must e-mail their public comment to [email protected], prior to the Board meeting in order to be presented to the Board during the public comment portion of the meeting.

Hi! My name is Adalyn Pohl, and I am the editor-in-chief of the new, student-run newspaper the Brahma Lariat. I am so excited to be a part of getting this publication off the ground, as I am very passionate about writing and believe that the greatest asset to our democracy is educating the public via honest and fair journalism. I have competed in both Regional and National journalism competitions and received an Honorable Mention last year in News Writing at the JEA National Scholastic Press Association last year in Boston, Mass. Outside of journalism, I participate in basketball. I love to read and write. After high school, I plan to go to university to major in Psychology and pursue a career in neuropsychology or psychotherapy. I am so excited to see what this year brings and appreciate any and all support from our community.

Hello! My name is Jonah Ford. I am a sophomore this year at HHS. I love to talk, I am a very outgoing and talkative person. I joined the Brahma Lariat because I love to write. When I graduate I want to go to TSTC for an instrumentation degree. I have been in Hallettsville since the age of two, and I plan to stay here my whole life. My main goal in life is to see the world. I love listening to music, my favorite artists are Blink-182, AC/DC, but I will listen to anything country or rock. I have a chihuahua named Peanut. I can't wait to see how this year goes, GO BRAHMAS!

I got into the newspaper because I've been told that I am a good writer and I love to get publicity about things that people deserve to know. I am a transfer student to Hallettsville High this year and I would love to stay and try and make a name for myself in a small town. I came from Baytown, TX. It is more of a suburb of Houston and moving here is a big change with the size, culture, and geography of the town. It has been great being in Hallettsville and in the Lariat and I hope to write great articles and have lots of fun this year!
