On Friday, September 20th the Hallettsville Brahma varsity team traveled to Rice to take on the Raiders for their fourth game of the season. The Raiders went into the game undefeated, having shut out every team to the date. Hallettsville entered with a record of 2-1.
The Raider’s homecoming game opened up with a helicopter landing mid-field to deliver the game ball. It would end with a Raider win.
After four, hard-fought quarters, the Brahmas would come up 18 points short, scoring a single touchdown without a point after to the Raider’s score of 24.
“I think we need to work on actually being a team when we are facing adversity and rely and build each other up instead of beating each other up individually,” said Mycole Pagoda, the Brahma’s junior quarterback. “I believe we will come around when the games matter and we will find what we are missing and start playing how we believe we can.”
The Brahmas were short a few players for various injuries, but still worked as a team and tried their hardest to get through to the end zone. Their single touchdown was a victory in itself, as it was the first time this season that the Raider’s had let an opponent score.
“Proud of the way we are playing defense, we are running to the football and making our opponents earn everything they get,” expressed head coach, Levi Montgomery. “We though, are yet to play a complete football game, where our offense, defense, and special teams are all clicking. We have work to do.”
Coach Montgomery expressed his respect for the opposing team, complimenting Rice on a job well done in both preparation and execution.
“We simply got beat by a better Rice team. The Rice defense hadn’t given up a point all season, and the reasons why were very evident Friday night. Their defensive front is outstanding,” complimented Montgomery.
Moving forward, Coach Montgomery hopes the Brahmas will continue to trust the process. The season is still young and the team is still adjusting to this years changes. He is optimistic that they will come together at the right time.
The boys are playing Beeville this Friday night, September 27, at 7:00 p.m. at the Trojans stadium.
