What if your next art project could move, touch, or even solve a problem? Hallet Oak Gallery contest is challenging students or classrooms to reimagine art as not just beautiful but also functional, pushing boundaries and proving that art and STEM can come together.
The Hallet Oak Gallery in Hallettsville, TX, is affiliating science and art with an innovative contest designed to transform STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) into STEAM by adding art and creativity. This year-long project invites students and classrooms to design functional, interactive, or educational art pieces that emphasize and show the role of art in STEM fields.
“We are looking for enthusiasm to present a model in an artistic 3D form, not 2D. 2D is a photograph or painting. 3D, for example, would be welded, carved, glass blown, recycled glass, reclaimed appliances made into a robot, a creative abstract, a model that could be touched, it could move, have moving parts, mechanical parts, special lighting, push buttons, it could be a hanging object from a stand. The only limitation is it needs to be a free form that can either have its own stand or be placed on a small table.” Mieko Mahi, Hallet Oak Gallery, Co-Founder/Executive Director said.
The contest features four categories: art that moves or performs a function, programmable art, recycled material art, and art designed to educate about STEM. Winners will receive $500 cash, funding for materials to complete their commissioned work, and the opportunity to display their art during the Gallery’s monthly open-house events. The winners’ artwork becomes the property of the museum.
Participants will gain community recognition and a unique addition to their resumes for college applications. Hallet Oak Foundation, a 501 ( c ) (3) nonprofit, dedicated to fostering creativity and supporting local arts, offers an accessible platform for both emerging and established artists by operating the Hallet Oak Gallery as a place to see and enjoy art. The contest promises to highlight students’ creativity and innovation while still promoting education and STEM.
In addition to the contest, the Hallet Oak Gallery’s Open House Series provides an ongoing celebration of art and community. Free admission allows attendees to enjoy fresh artwork each month, meet local artists, and experience live music with complimentary appetizers. This all takes place on the last Saturday of each month from noon to 3 p.m. The Gallery is open with light refreshments and beginning at 4 p.m. live music will continue until the Gallery closes at 8 p.m. These events will take place on the last Saturday of each month from February to November.
