Starting this year, the HHS journalism group, Quill & Scroll, is hosting its annual powderpuff game. The sport of Powderpuff involves boys coaching girls on how to play flag football, with some of the other boys in their class serving as cheerleaders. This year, the Junior team will play the Sophomore team, and the seniors will play the teachers in the first round of the 2 round tournament.
This year, the Juniors are mainly coached by their classmate Eli Ferguson. Their team has had multiple practices in preparation for the game. Ferguson is very confident in his team’s ability to win over the sophomores and possibly even win the whole thing.
“I think we’re going to beat them by a lot; it’s really not that much of a competition. I think the seniors and us both understand that the real competition is going to be between us,” Ferguson said.
After playing, junior Jennessee Kutach had a great time playing and wishes to keep the tradition of playing powderpuff for many years to come.
“Overall, I think this event was great. There are some things that could be improved, but I think this was a great game, this was a great new introduction to Hallettsville ISD, and I think it should continue,” Kutach said.
After the Juniors and Sophomores played, the Juniors pulled out a big overtime win against the Sophomores, making the score 12-6, and advanced on to the Championship round.
This year, instead of the Freshman playing, their team was substituted out for the teachers. The seniors had a roaring start against the teachers and did not let up through the entire game, winning 12-0.
In the championship game, both teams fought hard on both offense and defense. With many interceptions, touchdowns, and controversies, the Seniors managed to pull out the win, but not without a fight from the Juniors, with the game coming down to a 50/50 decision from the Juniors, score a 2-point conversion or lose. In the end, the score turned out to be 14-12 seniors.
“I feel like my team did really good, and just excelled overall in defense and in offense with just the time preparation that we put in. 100 percent, I think this should continue, I think powderpuff is a great way to just have fun, and the guys just get to teach us a little bit about their attitude, and it’s just really great. Definitely more powderpuff games in the future,” senior Payton Mathison said.
As a whole, the teams enjoyed themselves and are already preparing themselves to do better next year.
“I think our first game we did really great. It was a little messy in the beginning, but then we got our act together. In the second game, our performance was probably the best you’ve seen on the field. I think we had a shot at that championship if it weren’t for certain circumstances,” Kutach said.
All of the teams have worked very hard to play in this game. Be sure to congratulate them on how they did and have a very merry Christmas, and enjoy your time off by reading the Brahma Lariat. GO BRAHMAS!!
