On Wednesday, Jan.15, the Lady Brahma cheer team competed in the state competition and placed 8th overall in their division. From football games, late-night practices, and lots of nerves, the team has worked very hard to get their routine just perfect for the judges.
Some of the younger cheerleaders have had a wonderful first year doing high school cheer with their teammates and will miss their seniors next year.
“The chemistry among my teammates is very good. I love cheering with them and will miss the seniors,” freshman Isabelle Bludau said.
A lot of the team was in shock when they heard the team’s placement at the state finals.
“I think my reaction was pretty funny. I was sitting by Bella and Edyn and we had heard that Franklin got 10th place and they were really good, so we were like no way. When we heard Hallettsville, I looked at Edyn and our jaws were on the floor,” freshman Allie Kocian said.
Payton Mathison, a senior on the cheer team, has grown very close to her teammates over the years and is proud of how they performed as a team in her last year, as well as the strong chemistry the team has developed this year.
“The only way that I would describe the chemistry on our team is as best friends. I feel like this year, especially, like all of us wanting to win or at least get top 10 in the state, all of us just became best friends, like staying in the hotel and everything was just really cool,” Mathison said.
Mathison’s teammate, sophomore Abby Ressler, has stepped up a lot this year as a flyer and has definitely contributed a lot and will continue to contribute to her team for her last year’s in high school.
“When I heard our name called, I was shocked and excited because there were a lot of teams that got called out below us that have won state and so it was super exciting to move that far up,” Ressler said.
As a sophomore, Ressler has had a bunch of experience with all of the girls on the team, making sure to include them all in celebrations, team bonding, and in her cheer family.
“Everybody put so much effort and so much work into that routine, so we were really just proud of ourselves,” Ressler said.
As a team, the girls worked very hard on their routine and all put in the work to make it to where they are now. Make sure to congratulate them on their accomplishments and achievements and check out the Brahma Lariat for more of your local news.
