Every year during the first week in March the Brahma Baseball team hosts the Jimmy Appelt Tournament. The Jimmy Appelt tournament is a three day tournament usually Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This year, 2026, it lasted on March 5, 6 and 7.
“The naming of the tournament is due to Coach Shorty Cook, who took over after I retired in 2006. His very first year as the head baseball coach he started the Jimmy Appelt Tournament. I think Coach Cook named it after me because he wanted to honor my career and for that I’m very grateful to him,” Appelt said. “The Jimmy Appelt Baseball Tournament brings recognition to Jimmy Appelt who coached Brahma baseball from 1982 to 2006. During his years at Hallettsville High School, one of his goals was to make Brahma Baseball well known throughout the state of Texas.”
President of the Brahma Booster Club, Jessica Robertson explains why she decided to support the Brahmas and what this tournament means to her. The Brahma Booster Club is a volunteer–run organization that supports extracurricular activities.
“The Brahma Booster Club is here everyday to support Brahmas and Lady Brahmas. We love hanging out with all the great people, coaches, parents, and Booster club Officers,” Robertson said. “It’s a great opportunity to serve this community and visitors while enjoying some great ball games.”
Izaiah Ordaz is a junior on the varsity baseball team. His mother Elda Ordaz has been watching her son play baseball since little league. She talks about why she put her son through baseball and how she’d motivate the team.
“It makes me so happy to see him play, we have been so excited seeing him start in little league and now in high school,” Ordaz said. “I doesnt matter if we have one wrong play, we have to move on to the next play.”
