Homework grades up, but test grades down. AI has affected a major percentage of students in the U.S. Many students see AI as a “tool” when allowing AI to do their work for them. This has prevented them from applying their work to their tests, resulting in low test scores. They also negatively impact their reading and writing abilities. Kristen Jasek, forensics teacher at HHS, expresses her beliefs on AI.
“Overall, AI has affected my test scores; they’re more likely to use AI on homework. When it comes to the test and they have to apply that knowledge, they can’t,” Jasek said. “It has negatively impacted their writing and reading abilities, because their so dependent on AI.”
Coach and geometry teacher Tim Bridges discusses the significant impact that AI has had on test grades, along with his opinion on the use of AI.
“Kids use AI on homework, and during tests, they can’t use AI,” Bridges said. “But I think AI can be used to double-check work.”
English teacher and coach Christina Halata explains her plans for keeping AI out of the classroom, as well as the assignments on which students are most likely to use AI.
“I try to keep all my work classroom-bound, where I can control computer usage with tools like GoGuardian. I also run documents through detection software programs and deduct points if a large amount of AI is detected,” Halata said.
History teacher and coach, Greg Bagby, uses AI to format assignments and create platforms for information. He then explains how AI can be used for good and how to discourage it in the classroom.
“If AI is used as a tool to assist, it can be good. When it becomes a replacement for thinking, that is where the problem lies,” Bagby said. “Teachers can educate students on appropriate use, but in the end, it’s up to students to make the choice to use it correctly.”
Although teachers may use AI, the primary users are students. Sophomore Luke Freytag speaks of his experience with AI.
“I haven’t become dependent on AI,” Freytag said. “I just use it to brainstorm.”
AI is a powerful tool that can be used for both positive and negative activities. Make sure you’re not using it for the wrong reasons.
