Winter is here and so is basketball season! As touchdowns and first downs end, it is replaced by three pointers and dunks, with some of the football players jumping straight into basketball. One student playing both basketball and football is Senior Matthew Montgomery.
“I’m really excited to see what happens this season, especially based on how I played last year,” Montgomery said.
Some of Montgomery’s younger teammates, Sophomore Mason Grahmann, have big aspirations for this year based on their performance last year.
“I’m most looking forward to the tournaments, away games, and travelling on the bus with all of my friends. I’m going to work on getting more points, more rebounds, and just overall everything,” Grahmann said.
Mason is not the only one in his family playing basketball. His younger sister, Freshman Heidi Grahmann, had the opportunity to make varsity in her first year trying out for the high school team!
“Sure, it’s a little sad that she made varsity before me, but I’m really happy for her,” M.Grahmann said.
The boys’ head coach, Ryan Barnes, has big plans for this year. Being a football coach as well as a basketball coach, Barnes is already looking for his leaders on the team as the season starts.
“I’m hoping that the seniors will step up and be leaders of the team. Making practices as game-like as we can is going to be a key thing. If we are to replicate game speed in practice, that will go a long way in getting us prepared for games,” Barnes said.
One of his seniors being Montgomery, coach Barnes is hoping he will step up this year and be a leader, and as a leader, he has big goals for his team and himself for his last year.
“I think the biggest difference for me will be going from ‘football fit’ to ‘basketball fit.’ I think this year, I’m most excited about our post-game with our bigger players. I’m excited to see how this season goes,” Montgomery said.
Before the boys have even started practice, the coach is already looking forward to the big things that this team will accomplish this year and how he is going to get them there.
“Getting the players out on the court and preparing them for the start of the season. At the beginning of the season, there will be a lot of learning; it’s important for us to learn quickly,” Barnes said.
