Spikes in hand and feet on the track, Hallettsville High School Brahmas and Lady Brahmas get ready for a season of track. Boys coach Dustin Keller explains his goals and what he values in a student athlete, as well as his thoughts on the mental versus physical side of track.
“I value kids who work hard and they don’t ever give up. They’ll come, compete, and try their hardest every time, no matter what happens,” Keller said. “I think track is mostly a mental sport; kids who are only here for a day or two can’t wrap their heads around the work it takes.”
The girls’ coach, Courtney Olbert, has been coaching track for 11 years and expresses how she maintains a positive working environment for athletes and what she looks for in female athletes.
“I like to make practice fun by coaching them hard but showing love when they do good things, not just things that are correct, but whether they get personal records or break school records,” Olbert said. “I look for girls who have integrity and confidence, as well as girls who can be a teammate.”
Senior Savion Adams continues his third year as a track athlete. Starting as a sophomore, he participates in long jump and the 400m relay. Savion talks about his plans this year and why he chooses to still participate in track and field.
“Winning first place is my number one goal. Making it to state is all I care about right now,” Adams said. “I find track really competitive and fun. I always think about my competition.”
Sophomore Lydia Kram is in her second year as a Lady Brahma athlete, competing in various events in track and field. She explains what makes her want to continue track.
“The things that make me want to run track every year are my love for running and the team I get to be a part of. Running and sprinting makes you feel capable and in shape as well,” Kram said. “The things that keep me from quitting are the fact that I have worked hard to get where I am, God’s got me, whether I beat my time and win, or lose, and lastly, that I want to not only do well for myself, but for my team and coaches as well.”
With Track season coming up fast, come out and support our Hallettsville Brahmas and Lady Brahmas at all their track meets.
