Lady Brahma softball started their regular season of games on Monday, Feb. 9, with a loss of 11-0 against El Campo. The girls have been hard at work since the end of January, preparing themselves for this year’s season. Head coach Callie Kresta has some great plans for her team this season, in order to come out on top at the playoffs.
“Obviously, our goal as always is to make a long playoff run. But that starts today with this game, then we get into tournament play, and then district pay and then we roll into playoffs,” Kresta said.
Not only do the coaches have big goals, but so do their players.
“One goal I definitely have, and I’ve had for a while, is just to gain more confidence in myself because I know I am capable of doing things. I just need to really, like, put that to the test and know that I can,” senior Izzy Deaton said.
Being a part of a team means not only looking for growth in yourself but also in other members of your team.
“I think that a lot of people have grown, and everybody’s kinda working together, and people are growing in their positions, and we’re working as a team now. Its kinda progressed through all of our scrimmages,” sophomore Caitlynn Halata said.
The softball program has many young girls who love playing and helping their team in any way they can. This is something that Coach Kresta looks for in each one of her players.
“Obviously, a work ethic, and I want them to want to be there, so invested in the program. I think that’s a big thing, you know, if you have kids that are invested in the program, then you’re gonna have a good outcome,” Kresta said.
Senior Izzy Deaton has been playing softball for Hallettsville for two years, this being her last. She has a little advice to share for younger players who may not be as confident as they can be.
“So my main advice would be never to put yourself down for one messed-up play. If you mess up, you have to gain confidence and gain what you did wrong, and you have to put that to the next play and not just dwell on something that you messed up on the 1st time,” Deaton said.
