On Feb. 19-21 The Hallettsville FCCLA Chapter sent students of all grades to Galveston for their Region 4 competition. It was held in the Galveston Convention Center and the FCCLA Chapter was accompanied by Mason Briscoe, Christen Smajstrla, and Kelly Kirkman. Mrs. Smajstrla talks about why she became the Advisor and how FCCLA can help students beyond school.
“I decided to be the FCCLA advisor because FCCLA and FCS (Family consumer science) need to remain a part of the curriculum and extracurricular activities. When I was in school, they wanted to get rid of the FCS classes and I passed around a petition to keep it in school. I love FCCLA and the opportunities it gives people,” Smajstrla said. “As members, students develop numerous skills for life. FCCLA allows students to complete projects that can prepare them for careers including Job Interview, Entrepreneurship, and Career Investigation.”
Hallettsville FCCLA sent freshman Rhea Kirkman to Galveston to try out for a regional officer position. She tried out for Public Relations and had to give a speech in front of voting delegates. Rhea talks about her experience and how she was even persuaded to join.
“I didn’t do an event, but I did run for regional officer. I wanted to run for public relations because of my social skills, but I am officially the parliamentary law vp and I’m very proud,” Kirkman Said. “My favorite part of the trip was Friday night and being able to hype everybody up at the general meeting with my new officer group!”
Sophomore Lyla Graham competes in the knife skills event. It is an event that can only go to state; knife skills is a proficiency event which can’t go to nationals. Lyla talks about why she chose knife skills and her favorite part of the 3-day trip.
“I love cooking, having good knife skills, and being able to cut vegetables is a big part of that,” Graham said. “My favorite part of the trip was getting to watch the keynote speaker.”
Senior Peyton Pasak is in her last year of FCCLA and last year of high school. She’s on her way to state with Paige Ulcak for a community service project. She talks about her event and why she is in FCCLA.
“I decided to join FCCLA because I was influenced by my peers to do so. I also wanted to spread my horizons on what I competed in,” Pasak said. “ I chose my event because I wanted to lend a helping hand in my community and school.”
Come out to Dallas, Texas, to see FCCLA students participate.
