Congratulations to our boys with an impressive 22-15 win against Shiner High School on their first game of the season. With the Comanche stands being filled with maroon and white, the game was a rollercoaster of emotions with both teams battling it out until the end.
Our boys fought hard, making a strong comeback in the second quarter with a score of Shiner 15, Hallettsville 8, then in the last 22 seconds winning 22-15.
Head coach, Levi Montgomery, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance but emphasized there’s room for improvement.
“The first half we did some good things, both on offense and defense, but had some mistakes that led to Shiner’s lead at the half. Our offense moved the ball, but turnovers and penalties hurt us. Defensively, we played well, but allowed too many big plays.” said Coach Montgomery.
Making a comeback in the second half of the game, Coach Montgomery highlighted the changes the team made and how it came out in their benefit.
“In the second half, we had made some minor adjustments with our defense, which led to shutting out Shiner in the second half,” said Montgomery, “Offensively, we continued to do what we knew we could do, which is run the ball and hit the intermediate passes.”
One of the standout players, Mycole Pegoda, also expressed both accomplishments and improvements over Friday’s game.
“I could have done a better job in the game at making the right read during our run option plays. I feel like I set the running back up to get hit more by making the incorrect reads at times. I feel like I did really well running the ball and being physical at the point of contact.” said Pegoda.
When asked about their favorite memory from Friday’s game, quarterback Mycole Pegoda and Coach Montgomery shared the same one.
“My favorite play from this last game had to be when our quarterback Mycole Pegoda had about a 40-yard run where he ran over Shiner’s defensive back. Mycole runs the ball hard and brings us an edge offensively.” said the coach.
“My favorite memory from the game was my first run of the night. I scrambled out to my right, escaped one guy then ran over the Shiner quarterback, number nine, and kept running then ran over number 11- the linebacker I believe- and continued to run and instead of running to score I found their corner number four and ran straight for him and put my head in his chest. I did these things to set the tone early that we as a team were going to be more physical than Shiner offensively.” said Pegoda.
Another standout player, Matthew Montgomery, played a great game. The highlight of the game, according to Matthew, was scoring his first varsity touchdown.
“My favorite memory would probably be scoring a touchdown. That was my first touchdown in a varsity game.” Montgomery said.
With this win, Hallettsville High School sets a positive, winning tone for the season ahead. The team is looking forward to building on this success and correcting the minor issues that arose during the game. The energy and determination shown on Friday night has fans excited for what’s to come.
