On Friday, Oct. 4th the Rockport-Fulton Pirates traveled to the Brahma Memorial Stadium for our homecoming night. The Pirates went into the game with a record of 3-2, the Brahmas 2-3. At the end of the night, our Brahmas were bested with a score of 20-28.
The Hallettsville stands were filled with maroon and white in celebration of Homecoming night. The student section full of cheers and the jingling of many students’ mums’ bells. After the game, we had our annual burning of the letters.
During the first quarter of the game, the Brahmas scored on only the second snap. The score would stay close through the second quarter. However, as the game-clock ticked towards zero, the Brahmas struggled to find the competitive edge.
“Playing a much larger school like Rockport, they simply have more players, and depth on our offensive and defensive lines will always be a challenge when you play a bigger school,” Hallettsville Athletic Director, Levi Montgomery said.
The Brahmas fought until the final buzzer, but in the end, Rockport held the upper hand.
“Certainly in the second half of the game, we had opportunities but failed to get it done on either side of the ball,” stated Montgomery. “We allowed Rockport some critical third and fourth down conversions and offensively we could not convert when we needed to.”
Coach Montgomery is proud of the Brahma boys for staying optimistic and sees this game as a valuable experience moving forward. Montgomery believes this will help us move forward as playoffs come.
“I am proud of our kids and remain optimistic about our growth and where we are headed. We now begin district play against a very tough Hitchcock team. The tough non-district schedule as well as playing Hitchcock in the first game is going to do nothing but give us valuable experience that we will be able to lean on once the playoffs come,” said Coach Montgomery.
As the Brahmas continue their season, Coach Montgomery stressed the importance of continuing to believe in their team’s capabilities.
Despite the loss, the Hallettsville Homecoming festivities continued after the game. Selected seniors lit letters spelling out “BRAHMAS” as the school commemorated another celebration of Homecoming.
The district season continues with the Brahmas’ next game against Hitchcock this Friday, Oct. 11, at 7:00 p.m. in Hitchcock at the Bulldog Stadium.
