Mother’s Day is more than cards and flowers, it’s a moment to celebrate the women who shape our lives with love, strength, and sacrifice. While Americans have officially celebrated Mother’s Day since 1914, its roots trace back even earlier to women’s peace groups in the 19th century. Today, it remains a cherished tradition, and at Hallettsville High School, students are reflecting on what their moms truly mean to them.
“My mom has impacted my life in every single way possible,” one anonymous student said. “I truly don’t know what I would do without her.”
For Christina Halata, her mom’s impact goes far beyond daily lessons. “My mom’s dream was to own her own flower shop. She never lost sight of her goal,” Halata said. “After working several different jobs to support her family, she was finally able to take the plunge and buy a business that is still run by my sister, and all of us on Valentine’s Day. Together, she and my dad showed us that dreams and families are built on a strong foundation in our faith in God, hard work and tough love.”
Mothers not only support dreams, they also pass down wisdom. “Forgive but don’t forget what those have done to you,” Haleigh Mikesh said, sharing a valuable life lesson from her mom. Another student said their mom taught them, “Don’t try to please others, be who you are.”
Some lessons are simple but deeply meaningful. “To be nice to others,” Matthew Gimler said, while Kaden Clark shared that his mom taught him the importance of “being respectful.”
Students also recognized the qualities they share with their mothers. “Our ways of seeing the good in people,” Mikesh said. “How we are ourselves and not caring what people think,” another said. Clark said he and his mom are both “hardworking,” while Halata described a personality trait they both carry: “We are both quick-tempered.”
And when it comes to gifts? Students had their picks ready. “Flowers or a lunch date,” Mikesh said. “A cool Yeti cup,” Clark said. “A day doing HER favorite thing!!!” added Halata.
Mother’s Day is a chance to say thank you to the women who lead, guide, and inspire, one lesson and hug at a time. Now go give your mama a big hug!
